A court in Shenzhen, China recently ruled that a stock market analysis article generated by the robot named "Dreamwriter" of Tencent enjoys copyright protection. The court ruled that the article generated by AI has originality and belongs to the “written work” as defined in Chinese Copyright Law and hence is the protected by copyright law.
The court decided that the Shanghai company named Yingxun used this article on its website without authorization and therefore infringed the copyright of Tencent. The work is regarded as the product of the legal person, i.e. the plaintiff, which is Tencent, the company, not a natural person.
This is believed to be the first case in China related to the copyright of AI written work.
